Terms & Conditions
Welcome to the Manitoba Historical Society’s (“MHS”) website (the “Website”). Please read these terms and conditions (this “Agreement”) carefully as they govern your access and use of the Website, and the services available on the Website. By using the Website, you agree to follow and be bound by this Agreement.
a. Non-Commercial Use Generally
The Website was created to foster the widespread distribution of information about Manitoba’s history. As such, except for archival content (see below), you may use the content on the Website (the “Content”) for non-commercial purposes without charge provided that you explicitly acknowledge the MHS as the source of the information using the following citation: This information has been provided by the Manitoba Historical Society. Please visit their website at www.mhs.mb.ca.
The citation must be clearly visible and may not be obscured. MHS reserves the right to revoke any person or entity’s permission to use the Content.
b. Non-Commercial Publications
The Content may not, in whole or in part, be used in non-commercial published material or publications without the express written consent of MHS, which will not be unreasonably withheld. In order to request permission to use the Content in non-commercial published material or publications, please email MHS at email@example.com. Please provide details as to what Content you wish to use and which publication it will appear in. This section only applies to Content that will be used in published materials or publications in a non-commercial context. For further clarity, published material means any content published in print and does not include online material.
c. Academic Use
If you are a student or a teacher in a bona fide educational institution (e.g., schools, colleges, universities), you may use the Content for academic use without restriction, and without requesting formal permission from MHS as long as: 1) you explicitly acknowledge the Manitoba Historical Society as the source of the Content using the following citation: This information has been provided by the Manitoba Historical Society. Please visit their website at www.mhs.mb.ca; 2) the Content will not be used in published material or a publication and; 3) no fee is charged for the use of the Content.
The Content may only be used, in whole or in part, for commercial purposes with the consent of MHS. In order to request permission to use the Content for commercial purposes, please email MHS at firstname.lastname@example.org, clearly indicating the nature of the request in the subject line. In your email, please provide: 1) a description of the Content to be used from the Website; 2) a detailed description of the way in which the Content will be used; 3) the names and addresses of person(s) and/or publishers of the media in which the Content would appear and; 4) the proposed sale price of the media.
In the event permission is granted to use the Content for commercial purposes, you must explicitly acknowledge the MHS as the source of the Content using the following citation: This information has been provided by the Manitoba Historical Society. Please visit their website at www.mhs.mb.ca. and provide gratis one or more copies of the published media to the MHS for the inclusion in our library.
Many of the photographs on the MHS website come from archival collections such as those of the Archives of Manitoba or Library and Archives Canada, and are used on the Website with their permission. As such, the MHS cannot give you permission to use these photographs. Instead, you must contact the original archives to request permission for your particular use. Where possible, the accession information is listed with the photograph(s) on the Website to help the archivists in finding the originals in their collections. If you are unsure as to whether a photograph is from an archival collection, please contact MHS at email@example.com, clearly indicating the nature of the inquiry in the subject line of the email.
Reposting on other Web Sites
You may not repost photographs, text, or data from the MHS website, in whole or in part, on other websites or social media (including, without limitation, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat). However, you may use hyperlinks to specific pages in the Website. When linking to the Website, you must link to the specific page you are citing as opposed to the home page of the Website (referred to as “deep linking”) and cite the date the page was most recently updated if listed on the page (most pages on the Website have a date indicating when the page was most recently updated). For example, refer to a specific page about Louis Riel (www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/people/riel_l.shtml) rather than the home page of the Website (www.mhs.mb.ca).
For any other inquiries with respect to our Terms and Conditions of Use, please contact MHS at firstname.lastname@example.org.
